Is the indica and sativa distinction real?

Botanically it describes plant shape, not effect. As a shorthand for how a batch tends to feel it is loose at best: modern cannabis is almost entirely hybridised, and two plants sold under the same label can differ more than two sold under different ones.

Long rows of cannabis under a clear sky

What the words originally meant

Short, broad-leafed plants from cooler climates were called indica; tall, narrow-leafed plants from warmer ones, sativa. That is a description of the plant, not of your evening.

What to read instead

  1. The terpene profile, which is measured and printed on every listing.
  2. The format, which decides how fast it reaches you.
  3. The reported cannabinoid content, where a plausible figure exists.
  4. The lineage, last, as a rough family resemblance.

Why we still print it

Because people search by it and it is a genuine part of a batch’s record. We print it as lineage, alongside the profile that actually predicts the experience, rather than instead of it.

This is not medical advice. Nothing here is a therapeutic claim, and nobody at Cannalab47 is qualified to give one. Cannabis affects people differently. Adults 21+ only.
