Edibles vs vapes.
A vape arrives in one to ten minutes and is mostly gone in two to four hours. An edible takes thirty minutes to two hours and lasts four to eight. That timing difference, not strength, is what should decide between them. Cannalab47 lists 650 edibles and 1034 vapes.
These are the two formats most people choose between, and the deciding factor is almost never strength. It is time.
| Vape | Edible | Notes | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Onset | 1–10 minutes | 30–120 minutes | The single biggest practical difference |
| Duration | 2–4 hours | 4–8 hours | Edibles commit your evening |
| Ease of adjusting | Easy — judge as you go | Hard — committed once swallowed | Why redosing edibles early goes wrong |
| Conservative start | One or two inhalations | 2.5–5 mg | From our dosing guide |
| Discretion | Vapour, faint smell | None | Edibles win outright |
| Consistency between batches | Varies with the extract | Dose printed per piece | Edibles are easier to measure |
So which should you actually buy?
- Choose a vape if you want it to arrive quickly, want to judge the amount as you go, or are trying something unfamiliar.
- Choose an edible if you want a long evening, want no smell at all, or want a dose printed on the packet rather than estimated.
- Choose neither together — taking both makes it impossible to tell which did what, and is the most common way a comfortable evening stops being one.
Why does an edible take so long?
It has to be digested and passes through the liver first, which both delays it and changes what reaches you. Inhaled cannabis crosses from the lungs into the bloodstream almost immediately. This is also why the same milligram figure is not comparable between the two.
Which is easier to get wrong?
Edibles, by a wide margin, and almost always the same way: taking more before the first amount has arrived. With a vape you can judge as you go. With an edible you have committed. Take 2.5 to 5 mg, set a timer for two hours, and do not revisit the decision before it goes off.
Questions people actually ask
Are edibles stronger than vapes?
Not inherently, but they are harder to control. An edible takes 30 to 120 minutes to arrive and lasts 4 to 8 hours, so a mistake commits you for the evening. A vape arrives in minutes and can be judged as you go.
How long do edibles take compared with vaping?
Thirty minutes to two hours for an edible against one to ten minutes for a vape. Edibles then last roughly twice as long. That difference is worth planning around more than any difference in the products themselves.
Which is better for a beginner?
A vape, usually, because you can stop. One or two inhalations, wait ten minutes, then decide. If you would rather have a printed dose, a low-milligram edible works too — just wait the full two hours before considering more.
Which is more discreet?
An edible produces no smell and no vapour at all. A vape is far more discreet than smoking but still produces visible vapour and a faint smell, so it is not invisible in the way an edible is.
